Mastic from the island of Chios is a dried resin obtained from a Mediterranean shrub: Lentiscus (Pistacia lenticus), traditionally used in the East as "chewing gum" to protect the gums and freshen the breath.
It is harvested from July to October, by incising the bark of the Lentiscus. From these incisions, flows in small tears, a yellow resin with a balsamic odor which will then be torn in the air to harden. This gives grains of Mastic, about 150 to 180 grams per year, for a tree.
THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS
Today many scientific studies confirm the therapeutic properties of Mastic even at low doses (1g per day for two weeks). Its effectiveness against the bacterium "Helicobacter polyri" has recently been shown. It can thus be used in cases of acid recovery, bloating, etc.
It is also effective in freshening breath, preventing the formation of dental plaque and tartar, preventing inflammation of the gums and tooth decay. Without forgetting the well-being of the throat!
